Artist Statement

My artistic practice focuses primarily on figure drawing and mark making.  I love exploring different marks while gesture drawing.

Evidence of the struggle is the most interesting thing to me. Perseverance and adaptability determine who and what we become, the sum total of our experiences.

I like the parallel between how we humans grow and change and how the figure develops on the page. It’s often a messy business but it’s what makes us who we are.

I create figurative works from life using loose, active marks. I try to describe what the model is doing with the initial gesture. Then more marks, as intuitively as possible, to capture the likeness, attitude and mood. If I don’t like a mark, I’ll just make another, often right over the earlier ones, continuing to build and revise, deciding which flaws to embrace and which to alter. I want the viewer to experience the beauty resulting from the struggle.”
